Has anyone ever been tagged for painters painting over the label on a meter can that says don`t paint this label, yes I am serious !!!

Re: Painted labels

Sounds legitimate and no different than painting over the face of a receptacle. What I am curious about is why the label is there in the first place? I know of no reason that a meter fitting should not be painted as long as the meter is not painted in most cases. We have labels that are not to be painted such as "480" or "Disconnecting Meter Will Not Disconnect Service". If that is the type that was painted, it would be a safety issue. :D

Re: Painted labels

This makes no since.I could understand saying don't paint this can.Or if the label also contained other info.Any chance it is some kind of bar code they could scan ?

OK exsplain how the inspector knows what it said if it was painted ? ;)

Re: Painted labels

It`s a label that says (DANGER HIGH VOLTAGE) The manufacturer affixes it on the upper left corner of a standard 200 amp meter cans dead frontThere is a notation on it that says this label is not to be painted.Oh it is also written in spanish.Guess the painters just can`t read....I just have a problem that we have been tagged for this stupid label being painted and we have to have a reinspect for something this ridiculous

Re: Painted labels

Interesting, it is not high voltage, it is not even medium voltage. I don't see a problem with painting over or even removing the label. :D

Re: Painted labels

This makes some since now.Your violation is not using device as listed. As far as the cost of reinspect ,that's simple .Type out a bill.Include reinspect charge, your time to investigate along with travel time, phone calls and any arguing time over the bill.$100 should cover it and no reason with a DO NOT PAINT to even argue. How do they unpaint this without harming sticker ?

Re: Painted labels

The inspector is being ridiculous. I have never seen a meter can with such a label, could it be a local requirement? What are you suposed to do now replace the can?

I would just remove the sticker, it only says you can't paint it right? ;) Gonna fall off eventually anyway.

Re: Painted labels

We use milbank 200 amp meter cans I never noticed it on the dead front till the inspector took his screwdriver and scratched off the paint to reveal it and yes it does say DO NOT PAINT.ridiculous yes but this comes from the same inspectors that sign off the uffer connection that has to be cut below grade on rough and want to see it again on a final???As far as do they come back OH YEAH !!!!

Re: Painted labels

(He used to be a mattress tag inspector, ho ho ho!) :D

Seen equipment fail due to painting the inside, but I don't recall failing due to paint on the outside.

Re: Painted labels

Actually I have a few choice names for him but they would be edited if used. His whole premis is that the label is a manufacturers instructions and it does say DO NOT PAINT OVER THIS LABEL.petty yes dangerous no but I am only a dumb electrician what do I know ;)

Re: Painted labels

Allen i can't help but think he is just out to get you or your company or the builder. We have the same inspectors and we never get picked on for the stuff they come down on you hard for.He has you on this one if he pushess the code that far.I don't usually suggest this but it might be time to have a chat with the chief.Change out the lid and go to battle, you can't make him anymore of a a-- h--- than he already is,so nothing to lose.

Re: Painted labels

Jim I have spoken to the chief and well he stands behind him I think you know who I am talking about..... Actually the chief is a really nice guy but he won`t budge on this one !!! His argument is that the label says do not paint and I have nothing to argue about.Petty yes !!! But we have no recourse but to scrape and go on

Re: Painted labels

Ok, but back to my question- it's been painted, you can't get the paint off without damaging the label. At this point what does he expect you to do about it? Can you get replacement labels? If you can't, does he want you to replace the can? What?
