Pancake "box"

Yeah, it was the first time for me, too. Then today, I ran across another one in a different house! Same kind of wiring attached to it, but only one set rather than four.

Here are a few pictures of the "box" I yanked out...

Wow, that's even flatter than the flat ones I've encountered. The ones I've pulled had about a 1/8" lip on them, just enough to call them a box instead of a lid.

It looks like a cross between a round cover and a pancake box. It also looks like it was designed to enclose a fixture canopy before real boxes were invented, to protect the ceiling from the fixture joints.
