Hopefully someone can help me out. In the NEC 2005, I can find where it says that a minimum clear distance of 36" is required in front of the panel (Table 110.26(A)(1). Does anyone know where it tells me the minimum distance that another panel can be mounted next to another? I am hearing 6" but i cannot find proof of this, any help? i am attaching a pdf file for more clarification.

thank you in advance

The only NEC requirement regarding width is a minimum of 30" of clear space in front of each panel, however that 30" may extend across adjacent panels.

That being the case you can generally place panels right up against each other,

Panel

Panel

Panels are put side by side in many instances, commercial areas and office bldgs, and the like. Like Bob stated 30" clearance in the front of them.

Another related requirement is that you have to be able to open the panel door a full 90 degrees. I do not know whether, with the design of some panels, you might have interference with the opening of doors, if two panels were to be touching side-to-side. But as the others have said, no NEC rule gives a minimum side-to-side distance.

There is, however, another way to get into code trouble. It could happen if the two side-by-side panels were not the same type. If one is deeper than the other, then it might interfere with the working clearance of the other. You need 30 inches of width. As Bob said, you can use the space in front of the second panel, as working clearance for the first panel. But if the second panel is deeper, you can't use the space in front of it.
