panel location from floor

I had to lay on my belly in water in the crawl space to check a lighting and branch circuit panel.

Some older houses use to put the panels in the outside pantry. Where you would walk in from ground height. Then years later they would utilize the space from the interior of the house. Then they would build a floor at the same level of the inside. This would make the electric panel very low.

what was that beam holding up? I hope it was way over engineered to allow for having half of it removed. I would have stood my ground on that one before weakening the structure.

Give me some credit man I didnt just fall off the turnip truck. It was an old porch will beams all around .It later got enclosed and there are studs on 16" centers under the beams.

Our utility company will not accept meters over 6' high to the center of the meter. I guess they get too many complaints from the cute, but short meter readers. On breaker panels I never put the highest breaker over 6' on residental installations. These heights can be pretty tricky on new construction where the grade will vary from rough-in to trim. That is why I prefer to have breaker panels in the garage or utility room.

About the worst is hand dug basements around here where you have to cock your head just slightly to be under the floor boards. And constantly slamming your head, face etc... into the floor joists.
Its why I almost always wear a Hard Hat.:)

I helped with a 24 unit retirement home once. Each unit was to be ADA compliant, so we put all the panels at 48" to the top. I cut them all in while sitting on a bucket. Nice.

Some ADA is over the top what about the 6'6" guy with a bad back? He can't bend over to see the panel. Common sense should play into some of this. Oh no it doesn't the government in involved.
