I need some help! I'm thumbing through my code book but I can't find anything definitive on this......perhaps i'm missing it. Can a service panel legally be attached to a exterior wall? Can you give me a code ref to look at?

exterior wall meaning outside the building or inside on an exterior wall? Either way I dont see any violation.

Sure. Just keep a bit of spacing if it's masonry.

As Marc says-- Raintite panels. Very common here. The trick is how to be code compliant with your entry into the box, esp with many nm cables.

In the NEC prior to the 2008, look in Table 430.91. In the 2008 NEC, look in Table 110.20. Take a look at the notes at the bottom of the table, they do help.

Thanks Pierre, that did help as well. I'm square now. Sometimes that "Rain Tight" and "Rainproof" throw me off a bit :grin:

I hate to say it again, but it may be in the AHJ rules. Not the catch 22 rules, the actual local code. It might be worth a call to the AHJ before the work starts.
