Pierre i don't think any of mine are near this serious or exspensive to correct.And i have changed my ways on many things after seeing my fault pointed out.And that is part of the value in this board.We all make mistakes,trick is to fix them and go on.
Just what would you suggest in this case?
I see a major defect here that will cause problems in sellability of this house someday.
Do you feel this should just be ignored ?

#4 Note that there are new people in the trade reading your replies. Remember when you were implying they need to learn on their own and not at your expense, well they may just be trying to learn here.

There are times in these posts that we can easily understand what is being asked and there are times there is not enough information to post an answer. This thread leaves much in doubt as to what actually transpired.
1. who inspected the house?
2. what did the plans say?
3. were there changes made after the final inspection?
4. what does this really look like?

without that, I find it hard to give the homeowner the kind of advice you did.

You are absolutely correct in that no one on this forum is mistake free- except maybe me :D just kidding.

I use the info provided.Short of seeing a job and prints none of us can answer perfect.
In this case he said NEW ,now if this was an old 2nd owner house then maybe someone changed a den into a bed room and added this closet.We were led to believe NEW house ,and not remodel.Now if he had said this room was called a DEN on the print and he is using it as a bed room then that changes things.

I appreciate all the excellent feedback. I spoke with the current city inspector on Friday. He inspected the house in December 2002. He pointed out the code violation with respect to the panel. The contractor showed him the permit (which was 7 months old) that gave him permission to install the panel in a clothes closet. He issued a verbal request to have a wooden door mounted over the panel to provide greater protection. I haved asked the contractor for a copy of the permit plus the town is looking for their copy.

The inspector said that the town did not adopt the 2002 NEC code until 3rd quarter of 2002 (after the permit was issued). He also stated that he understood this was for manufactured homes (trailers, etc.) not custom built homes. Also, this panel has a copper bus bar, which he felt made is safer.

The message thread shows the 2002 NEC code (240.24.D), but I would like to find the same referenced in the 2000 or 2001 manual. I will then pursue from that angle with the city first then the contractor.

Cajunfried, there is no 2000 or 2001, the previous code cycle was 1999 and 240-24(D) was identical in wording then.

"The clothes closet requirement came into the NEC in 1981. This closet if it is not a clothes closet can still have shelves. The architect can label it as a mechanical closet and it passes inspection. What happens after inspection is another story.
The closet does not need to be 36 inches deep if the opening in front of the panel is the minimum required width and opens to at least the required depth.

Unless they were on the 1978 code it was not permitted.How this got past even the rough inspection is beyond me.And no where in NEC did it have an exception if you install a door that he could violate work space or the clothes closet issue.Have never had an inspector that didn't at least look at the panel.No idea from here what recourses are available.
