The existing wall is 4'', I would need a 6" wall for the panelboard.

Mostly the fact that most panelboards are 20" wide and loadcenters are normally 14" wide. For instance, you can get several SqD panelboard series in 20", 14" and column width (8-1/2").
But the depth is another matter.
