when using parallel conductors do each of the conductors have to be able to carry the total load or are you allowed to use the parallel conductors as one ie.2 500s instead of 1 1000,if it is the first one what is the purpose of parallel conductors, also i need code references. THANKS

Re: parallel conductors

Why else would you use parallel conductors if they wouldn't share the load? I'm sure the question has a catch that I am not seeing, but check the index of your code book under "conductors - paralleled" for 7 code references.

BossHoss: Parallel conductors 1/0 and larger, the ampacity adds.

Parallel conductors #1 and under, have the ampacity of one.

Re: parallel conductors

Bennie you should write code articles, short and to the point. :)

What Bennie said answers your question but 310.4 goes into all the details and provides other articles that must be applied like 250.122(F) and 310.15(B)(2)(a).

For large services (or loads) the use of parallel conductors is necessary, a 4000 amp service might have 10 sets of 600 kcmil.

This makes a nice pile of scrap when you remove it. :D
