Thanx for the replies - however 310.4 says the raceway must have the same 'physical' characteristics, and the Handbook says: "same size, material, and length.".....I think getting into environmental, ambient issues is a real stretch.
As an electrician I would keep my conduit in the same place and abide by an inspector's instructions on this issue; however, as an electrical inspector [which I am] I would not feel comfortable with this stretch on the interpretation of this code section, especially when the Handbook keeps their comments to specific physical conduit characteristics.
