We have a 1600A feeder that leaves the switchgear via embedded conduit (approx. 20 foot run), through a pullbox and runs in cable tray approx. 300 feet. We are running 5 parallel 3/c 5ookcmil. For the run through the tray one #4/0 is required for the EGC, but the run via conduit would need a #4/0 in each conduit. I have talked to my coworkers and have gotten different suggestions. Can I run the #4/0 in a separate conduit from the switchgear, through the pullbox and the length of the tray run? Do I need to run the separate #4/0 from the switchgear to the pullbox, terminate them, and run a single #4/0 in the tray?

You have to install a full sized EGC of the wire type in each of the raceways unless the raceway itself can be used as an EGC. The EGC must be run with the circuit conductors. It cannot be run outside of the raceways or in a raceway of its own.
When you reach the tray you could connect the five 4/0s from the raceways to the single 4/0 EGC that will be installed in the tray.
