Paralleled conductors

I have a 400 amp outdoor disconnect that connects to a 6' interior gutter with 3" rigid conduit. The distance between the gutter and the outdoor disconnect is 40'. If I parallel 3/0 wires can they be installed in the same 3" conduit? Plus, am I required to bond the ground and neutral conductors at the first means of disconnect which would be my outdoor disconnect or is this bond made in the 6' gutter. I know I have seen it done either way on past jobs, but what exactlly does the NEC require? Thank you for the help.

Re: Paralleled conductors

A set of parallel 3/0s in a single raceway is at best rated 360 amps and may only be rated 315 amps.

What is the calculated load?

Re: Paralleled conductors

Hello Bob. The computed load is 340 amps. Would I be better off pulling 500 kcmil instead of paralleling 3/0 conductors? Thanks.

Re: Paralleled conductors

what do some of you other guys think? Run the 500 kcmil. Hate to be a pain in the kee :) ster but I have to bid this job tomorrow morning.

Re: Paralleled conductors

Chong, with the limited information (even with what you have provided) I would opt for the 500 kcmil.

This short of a run will not be worth fretting over, your installers will be able to work with 500 kcmil or 3/0.

As far as pricing this job there will be very little diference in material or labor

Re: Paralleled conductors

Check your manufacturer's data before buying any 3 inch LBs. A 3 inch LB may or my not be listed for use with 3 or 4 500 KCM because of wire bending space requirements.

Also, you can get LBs that have rollers in the opening to facilitate getting the wires in there. They are worth the extra money because you save on labor or even damaging the insulation.
