My employer today had me router a notch up a 4x4 treated wood pole and wants me to insert romex or uf cable sealed in the notch with a sealant. this is absurd to me but would this be considered a legal raceway? many things he asks me to do are blatant violations... not sure what to do other than look for a new company

Re: Parking lot light pole

Legal raceway, no. But cable dose not need a raceway but needs to be protected from damage. sleved in conduit would be good. If his plan is to leave it exposed I would say that is subject to damage 334.15(b) If set in notch and covered by wood I wood say is ok. Not a code issue wood not use sealant my react with cable sheath.

Re: Parking lot light pole

For this application see articles 300-4 (Wiring Methods) 336 (nonmetalic-sheathed Cable) & 339. Pay specific attention to 300-4(A)(2) & 300-4(E).

Careful about saying your employer is asking you to do "blatant violations" as he may be relying on you to know the correct codes but at least be bold and site the code application needed when you are concerned (just a suggestion).

Re: Parking lot light pole

Thankyou for the input. The wood notch just needs to be covered with 1/16" listed metal plates and this fabrication will be up to code.

Good point about my employer may be relying on me to do the right thing.

Re: Parking lot light pole

I don't see how 300.4(a)2 applys this notches is framing members. 330.4(e) only would apply if they were going to cover the pole in a finish material.
