Parking lot lights

The fuse holder and fuse alone cost more than $30. It's been a while since I've installed them but I know the fuse holders are pretty pricey.

30a nema 3r fusible discos here (the smallest I've seen btw) run under $15 wholesale, we'd mark that up 20% and throw appropriate fuses inside. but previous poster was right- if the problem is u/g then all this will be for naught. What was the voltage again? that price was for the 250v stuff... if these are 480v lights it's another story of course. (All the pole lights we've ever put up were 480 afaik- we do a lot of auto dealerships around here.)

I don't own a megger. I would simply tshoot this the old fashioned way.

You likely have 3 sets of 5 208v lights. AB, BC and CA. If you eliminate the fault by disconneccting one phase, you have narrowed down your search by one third. You then start in the middle of the remaing poles disconnecting until it clears.


Of course if it's not tripping at the time, this aint gonna work.


IMO individual fuses have their place but generally I don't like them.....ESPECIALLY when they are up in the freaking fixture I'm not a big fan of them jammed in the handhole either.

SO, I see you really don't work on parking lot poles, do you?

We're not talking about mounting a fusible disconnect on each pole. That's absurd. It's an inline fuseholder that fits inside the handhole that you use for pole lights. Not many owners would tolerate a fusible disconnect on each parking lot light pole.

Which is often the case, and where a megger comes into its own.

A midget fuseholder last time i checked was like 5 bucks when bought buy the lot and how much more is the fuse i sell them all day log flat rate 30 bucks a pole mind you it is to companys like wallmart where i am not so consened with mark up just sheer volume

Until the breaker starts to trip due to a bad underground piece, then that 3 or 4 grand they spent on pole fuses was for naught. Hey, I'm all in favor of the try at the upsell, but it might not pan out in the end.

By the way, I'm not so sure I could put fuses in a pole base for 30 bucks a go.

We also pay the men piece meal like 9 bucks a fuseholder

I know that some of the DOT roadway lighting often specs those breakaway thingamajigs that look sorta like fuseholders. They're for if a car runs down the pole, the conductors will unplug and not have ragged live ends for the public to be exposed to. I think that fitting has a name, but it eludes me at the moment.

Aren't fuses SOP in the lamp fixture itself on the newer models ?

Are you just saying, fuse at the hand hole at the base, if existing ?

Ouitdoors, in the cold fresh air, on a single man lift ... One has to Love their job!

Yeah you just crimp and go really easy and we allways try and put them at the base in the hand holes for thoes of you that are afraid of bucket trucks or lifts to me its more money well we need a lift it is 350 a day and we own ours it pure profit$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Its not all the time but when we relamp parking lots that is the going rate 50 plus poles and we allways need help

Thanx to everyone who contributed their advice to my problem. I got the megger, a fluke 1507. I will suggest in-line fuses to my boss and I appreciate the link. I have isolated approx half of the circuit and will go from there.

I'd never seen those inline things. But then again- after 6 auto dealerships (with hundreds of pole lights!) we've never had a problem with tripping breakers [knock on wood!]

208v heads huh? I think we're installing the same lithonia heads (/poles) everywhere. The auto guys like them a lot. We do the AB AC CA thing, alternating poles and dropping wire size as we get further out. And yes, we're putting a ground conductor in that PVC!!!

This is news to me. Required by specs? Certainly not any AHJ I've worked under.

I know that all of those fixtures in the 55 story building have fuses on the ballasts

Make sure to get the rubber boots for them, some guys forget or they are not sent out with them. Wrapping tape around the ends where that 1/16" of exposed crimp is a widow maker.
