I need to know if the NEC has any specs for clearances of underground cable, telephone and power pedestals. Thanks, Jim

Re: Pedestal Placement Clearances

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking about. Your question could mean alot of things.

1. Working space and Equipment space requirements are located in Section 110.26

2. Underground installation requirements are found in Section 300.5

3. Article 408 covers requirements for panelboard installations, 312 covers cabinet/enclosure installations.

4. Section 404.8(A) may be usefull.

5. Also, sometimes local building departments and local utility companies provided additional specifications for all the above sections.

Re: Pedestal Placement Clearances

Bryan, I have a homeowner who will not stop complaining to my local government until the competitors cable LE ped is moved out of the easement in his front yard. I did manage to get the competitor to move the large pedestal up even with a large telephone pedestal, but is now complaining that it is even, but 24 inches from phone. The cable company says that it is required that they have that 24 inches for access to the LE inside. This makes 2 pedestals in his front yard and 3 next to his, in the neighbors yard. Jim

Jim, that makes it an NESC issue and I doubt that there is a violation. The fact that they are in an easement means that even with legal action, they can still stay put. This guy is fighting a losing cause.

Re: Pedestal Placement Clearances

I agree with Charlie. Back in the 80's we built many hundreds of miles of cable plant both aerial and buried. Many times this was in new developments working along side TELCO and POCO in a common trench. Where the design allowed we would locate our pedestals with the POCO transformer as did TELCO.

This made it easy to run all services from one point to the houses in a common trench. Unfortunately the common location for the transformer and pedestals was not always on a property line or wherever a homeowner would prefer it due to the fact that we were there before the houses were built or design did not dictate it.

As the foreman on the job I was usually the first to hear complaints from the homeowners. My solution for problems like yours was simply to tell the homeowner "that's why God created shrubs".
