The inspector should fail this installation.

There are few places in the NEC that allow cord in a raceway and you already know cord can not pass through a ceiling.

Re: pendant lighting

So when did we start letting the GC tell us how to install violations??

I always thought the GC hired a licensed electrical contractor so the installation would be performed correctly.

Re: pendant lighting

Read more carefully. All I stated was that the G.C. would not like the appearnce of the connector through the canopy.

Re: pendant lighting

Looking at the cutsheet, it almost looks like the box was drawn wrong, and should actually be mounted horizontally, flush with the ceiling in the usual fashion, and the all-thread passed through the box's center KO, or cut to end within the box.

I say this because it looks like the wires exit (or enter, if you prefer) the cable just above the canopy. Can you mount the box as usual, via a T-bar bracket, and/or hang the all-thread from a fixture bar with nuts and fender washers?

Of course, there's nothing like looking at, and holding, the equipment in person.

Re: pendant lighting

I installed the same lights a couple of years ago.The design is poor.Yes,the way you see the picture is how you are supposed to mount them.Fortunately(or not),I had to mount them on a concrete ceiling.I don't remember the specifics, but where the aircraft cable comes thru the canopy I remember mounting 1/4 inch rod couplings thru the box(don't remember why).I discarded the mounting bracket.Sorry I can't be of more help on the install or dilemma in this case,I just don't recall that much about them other than they are time consuming.

Re: pendant lighting

Inspecor passed the installation after I installed the 1/2 flex between the box and canopy. I will never install them again. Thanks

Re: pendant lighting

Not everything that is UL compliant is NEC compliant - one of my buddies encountered the same situation with another light fixure that was wired at the factory with cord. The inspector insisted that the cord go into a conduit above the dropped ceiling or that there be a junction box right at the ceiling grid.

This is just one of those things where the NEC people and the UL people are just not coordinated.
