Just opinion wise, what's yours?

I have a fused service to replace including an upgrade. Once I place the new panel, quite a few branches will have to be spliced to meet their new designation. They will be able to enter the panel, yet some will have to be immediately spliced after entering the panel.

My question is how many of you would splice all in the panel or install JB's prior to the panel and run unspliced to their designation in the new panel itself?

This is nothing more than just personal opinion. I can make it look pretty either way. I think I can splice all of them vertictally on the inside of the panel, not immediately horizontally as they enter, they will all be top fed.

Some may say, "Who cares?" I ask, "How would you thread it?"

If it was my decision, I would get, say, a 12"x4"x4" or so trough to use as a J-box above the panel, and install a few EMTs down to the panel.
If it was my bosses decision, well, we will be splicing in the panel.

Splice them in the panel. Very seldom is there a compelling reason to do it in a box. Okay, that came out wrong, but you get the idea.

Choice 3 - gut old panel, screw cover shut - put new panel adjacent with a short nipple...

'They asked for a new panel - not to take the other one away with you.' :D

Less down time to boot!

FWIW, I've seen some guys do the panel splice thing on barrier strip inside the panel. It really does neaten up the job, but a little on the anal side.

It's an old, old 60A panel I wouldn't want seen in my ex's house. I am all about new or nothing. I am responsible from the weatherhead to the branches, I will NOT use the old fuse panel enclosure. Marc may have labeled it right by calling it "anal". Insurance adjuster coming in two weeks, I won't take any slack. It is how it is. It's either good looking or the broad goes home alone:D

But an ispector told me you can't splice in a a panel....... [whiney sarcasm voice]

In the panel. A bunch of jboxes or a big can looks like crap and is just a waste of time and materials.

In the panel is legal. Is this T&M or contract. If i could easily hide a j box out of site i would prefer that. Most likely your boss just wants enough to get it passed and make it safe.I do hope your using a large panel to give yourself plenty of room.Just how many must be spliced ?Perhaps a small 2 gang box right above it with blank cover could get rid of some splices. No easy answer without seeing.Bottom line is what your boss wants.
