How many of you out there bring your pets to work or know someone who does? I have gone to several jobsites where the electrician is there working and their pets are also onsite. Usually it is a dog, but Ihave now sen a snake and a really big lizard.

I know briging children to a jobsite isn't the best idea along with the fact that it is probably a OSHA/Labor Law issue, but what about animals?

Re: Pets At Work

At two of my previous jobs, an employee kept their dog in the car. A couple times a day they would take the dog for a walk. I always thought that was a poor way to treat a pet.

I've not seen a pet inside the work place itself. I would not want to. Who knows when you will have an employee with an allergy? I think it is as inappropriate as allowing an employee to play music without wearing headphones.

Re: Pets At Work

I don't see it as a big issue as long as the animal does not create a hazard or nuisance, and is safe for the animal.

My dog would almost certainly prefer to stay in the car all day with me visiting her a few times to let her out rather than be home alone all day.

If your living arrangements were such that your dog would need to be alone while you worked a 12 hour day, you might think about this a little differently.

Let me know before you come, so i can get the radio turned off. I dont let my employees wear head phones, cause if something happens i want them to be able to hear someone shout.

I also insist that the volume be turned down to a reasonable level.

I was really talking about an office environment. Naturally, you can't safely wear headphones to listen to music in a construction environment. But then I would prefer not to allow music in that environment. My basic principle is that nobody should have to listen to anyone else's choice of music. It's a matter of not being to satisfy everyone's tastes (I should say distastes) in music style. You are going to have someone who only listens to one type (e.g., Country & Western), and someone else who hates that type.

Re: Pets At Work

Charlie it's called tolerance. :D

Most of the large jobs we work radios are indeed 'forbidden'.

That said I have been known to ignore a small radio (or MP3 player) kept in a shirt pocket.

Occasionally they end up tucked up inside a hardhat, a violation in itself. Of course some guys are smarter about it then others.

Drilling a hole in the hard hat and extending the radio antenna through it is not the smart way not to get caught.

It looked a little like "My Favorite Martian" but I doubt many here know that reference.

As far as the animals I personally do not feel they belong at work and I doubt the GCs we work for would tolerate it.

I work for a smaller company with just a couple guys on each site, so I just say, let them work it out. If it becomes a problem then the radio has to go.

I wonder if taste is music could be used as hiring criteria. Thats an issue for a forum about labor law, not this one.

As for dogs on the job site, who cleans up when he piddles on the floor? can you ever get that smell out of the concrete or wood? I would think most GCs would view this along the lines of spitting chewing tobacco or dropping cigarette buts on the floor, and not allow it.

Rut Rho, I guess that makes me old. I used to watch it every week (not the reruns).

Remember...... Paladin (spelling?), Green Hornet, Maverick, Red Skelton ...... (those were NOT the days, no color, no cable, no computer/internet, party line telephones, no microwave ovens, no game consoles, no nothing).

Bringing pets to work is as smart as parents who take their 2 to 5 year old kids to dinner at a fancy restaurant or to the symphony or (??)and expect them to be quiet and behave when they are bored stiff with nothing to do but sit there.

Had a boss whose dog was in last 2% of life and not energetic enough to get out of its own way. Got upset when I stepped on it and dang near broke MY neck.

Two days ago this gal had to bring her Macaw to someone elses house - it attacked me. Dang that beak got big. Was trapped in bathroom - was considering punting but owner showed up.

Then last but not least dog piles on docks (live on boat).

SOLUTION shoot the owner then the pet.

:)

I can trip over my own dogs in my own home all day. Tripping over somebody else's dogs at work is irritating. It's unprofessional. It slows down production.

You left out the most amazing item: No remote control for the TV! You had to get out of your chair to change to one of the two other available channels.

My father had the remot thing licked. He just smacked the button on the back of my head and had me go change the channel. I was greatfull for the introduction of remotes. LOL

Ditto that. I was the remote control for the first 10 years of my life. You always just kinda sit around on edge when you're the remote. :D

I haven't seen the remote coffee pourer yet, so there's still that achievement waiting in the wings. :p

As a bonifide animal lover, i gurantee that your medical bills would he higher. And I would give the animal a ride to the doctor.

I can see how someone can hate animals. I don't but I hate most people.

I just can't make the jump from dislike to violent acts against.

Asking an animal owner to leave his pet at home is a far cry from injuring it.

I love animals (well most animals, as I am unfond of spiders and certain "bug-ugly" dogs), but I don't want them around me at work.
