Phase colors on panels and branch circuits

So if color coding makes us lazy then why does SER come color coded. You could get out the meter and tone it? But isn't it easy since it's color coded?
Most applications using SER only color that matters is knowing which one is the grounded conductor, the others don't matter.

I guess if you used it for a three phase service entrance you may have a need to know which is which on all three insulated conductors in some cases - others it still doesn't matter.
