In a 3 phase distribution system we call the phase conductors A, B and C phase.

In a single phase distribution I call the seperate energized conductors L1 and L2, never really researched this as a major issue but how do others refer to these conductors?

OH NO!

You just hit the subject of a long running unresolved thread.

Are they separate phases or just separate legs of the same phase.

Now I will run for cover....

Great idea - you can tell them apart

And the difference is?

Brain, Bob -
Just so I'm clear, I'm not poking fun at either one of you.

I call them A and B. Also known as black and red. Many years ago, it was fairly common to have a single phase system, and when 3PH was needed, the poco simply hung another pot on the pole, and brought the high leg in. All that was needed on the customers end was a meter base change, and either replacement of the existing panel to 3PH, or more likely add another 3PH panel next to the existing one.

I don't know when it became required to use B phase as the high leg, back then we always used C.

If I'm deriving single phase distribution from a 480 3PH source, I use the corresponding 120V colors. Say the primary is A and C. Brown and yellow around here. I will use black and blue for the single phase. If it comes from the poco, then it's black and red.

Ok, like Bob mentioned, I'm now diving for cover!! lol.

L1 - Ouch, that hurt!

L2 - Didn't I learn the first time!

I call them L1 and L2, but only because it seems like every single phase piece of equipment is labeled as such... ...
I like lemmings - so does my dog:D

Good

...I call them Legs instead of Phases. ...
Okay - that works

Nope you didn't - But that's okay - Still good choices

Shields up. Vectors on stun.
