I think it may be more of a case of diliberatly ignoring it than aproving it.

I would tend to agree.
I admit that I have been guilty of this violation several times during my career.

Well, I made the rounds of the local supply houses ... and guess what they said ....

Either they only had #8 and #6 in black, or the clerk had a 'special moment' when his computer told him there was a virgin roll of the white stuff somewhere in the warehouse. By far the most common response was "we have the white wire in another branck, and can get it here tomorrow .... you do want an entire roll, right?"

I suspect that's why the rule is simply ignored.

so it is or isn't allowed to phase tape the ungrounded conductors?

It is allowed for the smaller ungrounded conductors so long as you are not, except in certain circumstances, doing it to a white, grey or green wire.

So taping black wire with blue or red tape is OK.

Taping it with white, grey or green is not.

Taping white or green to black, except in certain circumstances is not.

Well I found the # 8 Gray no problem Job complete, Passed Inspection and
I always new the answer to my owen ? My boss was telling me you could not
Phase #6 wire and smaller Just had to check myself and confirm what I already knew.
