Can someone explain why we use 2Cos(30) for this calculation? I sort of see why we use it but dont quite completely understand. Can someone shed some light?

What kind of calculator do you use?

I hope the attached diagram will clarify the use of cos(30) and cos(60) in the addition and subtraction. A line between the arrow tips of the phasors or vectors to be added forms two right triangles with the resultant vector/phasor. The cosine terms determine the projection on the resultant.
