I have a job that I need to get power out to a keypad for a gated apartment complex. I've been told the phone company needs conduit out to the key pad to run thier phone cable through ...Can their phone line run inside the conduit with the electrical wire or do they need to have a seperate conduit run???Thanks, JB

No. Either keep your seperation if direct burial, or use seperate raceways. You have voltage differences and EMF noise that can effect the phone line. I don't have my Code book handy for the articles.

I'll help you out. Its legal if you put bricks in the conduit.

(A) With Electric Light or Power Conductors. Underground communications wires and cables in a raceway, handhole enclosure, or manhole containing electric light, power, Class 1, or non?power-limited fire alarm circuit conductors shall be in a section separated from such conductors by means of brick, concrete, or tile partitions or by means of a suitable barrier.

You can run one larger raceway and pull both power and phone cables in it if you choose. IMO two raceways are better given that there might be interference issues in one raceway.

If the power conductors are in a cable, this installation is legal. The code only prohits mixing with power conductors, not power cables.

Of course that brings up finding a legal cable method to pull through that underground conduit. :)

But as mentioned previously, very bad idea due to noise and EMF getting into the phone line, and that keypad system is subject to a lot of abuse and possible replacement.

Use a separate pipe.

Name a DB cable that can not be installed in conduit.

LOL Bob always manages to trip me up.. :)

But come to think of it, I don't know of any DB cable that can't be in conduit.....but would you agree, Bob, it may be a bear to pull in, depending on conduit size?

Is there an issue with insulation values.
The Data Cable might be 50V, and the Power Cable 480V.
I have seen this installed and wondered about the 430V difference.

Definitely, it could be tough to pull in and as you mentioned it may cause noise on the telephone. But most of the DB telco cable I see is copper shielded anyway.

I can see me doing it when supplying a job trailer or something of that nature, I doubt job specs would allow us to do it for a real job.:)

I'll just run them seperately...4" PVC would look a little strange running down the exterior wall of the complex and probably be pretty heavy with all the seperater bricks, How would I secure it to the building??? I also have to get power out to the front of the complex for lighting and was trying to save some time but I'll just bill them as seperate jobs. Thanks for all the help on this and would've responded quicker but ended up going to look at a small job that turned out taking up most of the day. By the time I got back home it was time for dinner and the couch...Have a great rest of the weekend and thanks again for the help...JB
