Re: pig tails on recp?

I don't know where "kookyville" Is "Whatever" but there are several counties in Indy and Fl.that prohibit the use of 14 wire in dwellings.

Do you think that is a good thing?

I don't, I think it's kooky. :p

Re: pig tails on recp?

Bob, I don't really care what they require in Kookyville, Mass., In or Fl. We "just do it" Residential. No 14 wire! Whats the world com'in to? I guess The "Inspectors" can't tell what gauge the wire is or what "color" (romex)

I just did not realize 14 AWG was unsafe. :D

Using 12 AWG is a fine design choice, it is a lousy code requirement.

Re: pig tails on recp?

Triphase, I learned something interesting at an electrical code seminar the State of Indiana put on in my hometown of New Castle last spring. New Castle had a City ordinance prohibiting the use of branch circuit conductors in 1&2 family dwellings that was smaller than 12ga. The State Deputy Building Commissioner informed us all that once an Indiana municipality adopts the electrical code that is officially adopted by the State of Indiana, they cannot change or otherwise ammend that electrical code. So the local ordinance of prohibition on 14ga was declared unenforceable by the State. So if you are a code enforcement official in a jurisdiction in Indiana, be careful of what you require from electricians. If it isn't required by the NEC, as adopted by the State of Indiana, you cannot legally enforce it.

Re: pig tails on recp?

I wonder what the reason is that they are prohibiting 14 AWG NM cable in those jurisdictions??? Are those who are performing the decision making from the industry? Do they have stock in copper??? maybe they were picked up by aliens and saw the light... now they are back to earth and are spreading the good news.

What about all of the lighting control circuits where there may be only 1 or 2 amps per cable?? would 12 AWG really be justified, especially these days with so many other costs in building sky rocketing.

Re: pig tails on recp?

amptech and pierre. I enforce code in Hamilton Co. and soon to be "Chicago area" New position. However, 14 vs.12 wire if loaded properly, "No problem" and I disagree with enforcing all 12 wire in residential.

I'm sorry to hear of the year ending on a bad note for you, Scott. Genuinely. :)
Suffice it to say, I am sorry for your hardship, and hang in there.) [/i]

Maybe it's a round-about way of preventing the use of stab wiring, since devices no longer accept 12 in the stab holes.

Re: pig tails on recp?

just moved here to st augustine florida from sarasota and the city of st augustine and st augustine beach do not allow 14gauge wire to be used in single/multi family dwellings. but anywhere else in the county 14gauge wire is allowed. ground rods or plates are not allowed to be used for the service only footer steel or ufer. any service that isnt back to back is required to have a disco outside no matter if the pvc is under the slab to an extended or not.

you want kookyville, come on down to st augustine.
