what's everyones favorite method for hanging a pipe rack from a metal/concrete pan deck?

rack will carry approx 6- 3/4" EMT with conductors (6-12 #12's per conduit), 1 - 1 1/4" EMT with 4 #3 and 1 #6, and a 2" EMT with 4 3/0 and 1 #4)

nothing huge...

speed of installation is a huge factor...

If there's a better way, I'd like to know about it too.

these will be in 5' from racks hung from I-Beams with 3/8" BC's and rod...(the I-Beams are 10' apart, and these are in the middle)

hilti makes a 3/8" threaded stud...the 1 5/8" shank pin had a tension strength of about 450lbs...so that's an option...but the guns we have only accept up to 1/4" studs:D

For the racks that you've described we would use 1.5" strut with 3/8" threaded rod and RAWL ROD ANCHORS. IMO they're the best anchors for poured concrete over metal pan if you need mechanical anchors. The 3/8" rods anchors only require a 3/8" hole. This is 1/4 of the size hole required for a 3/8" double expansion anchor (3/4" hole). Saves a lot of drilling especially when going through the metal deck.

1/4 stud then add a 1/4-3/8 coupling. As it sounds like you're also hitting the steel then you're not carrying all the weight on these anyway. If it worries you add one or two more....

thinking about it...not sure if the reducer coupling would make a difference...i could run 1" rod down, and it's still on a 1/4" stud...

I have a hilti te5 with the vacuum attatchment by the time you hem and haw about it you could just jump up on a ladder and drill and set the 3/8 steel anchors. Cut your rods in bundles on a pipe vise. Make everything up on a nice foldup workbench and just wrench them together. The propper measurement and layout is important the work shouldnt take that long if set up right. Prefab and repetitive motion is king here.

deck is poured...studs are up...2nd floor project..14' to the bottom of the deck..approximately 20 locations through out to install these out of the deck...the other locations will be suspended from the ibeams...

I do not know the cost. but after having installed them the speed and ease of installation would offset the cost on a sizable job.

We use dropin anchors just drill set the anchor thread the rod tighten jamb nut.

We use them too on occasion. Personally I hate to drill holes any larger than necessary. For a 3/8" rod with a drop in anchor a 1/2" hole is required, for the RAWL rod anchors the same 3/8" rod would require only a 3/8" hole.

I worked for an old timer years ago who would only order 3/8" double expansion shields for use in metal pan and concrete decks. Drilling 3/4" holes was brutal. I prefer the minimalistic approach of the 3/8" hole with having to drill out only 1/4 of the metal/concrete vs. the 3/4" hole.

If plans spec a 3/8 rod for the rack weight, wouldn't possible seizmic failure result in liability for rework, downtime, & third-party injury? Especially if investigators found those 3/8 rods attached from 1/4" holes drilled into the supporting structure?

Drilling holes in concrete decks is no big deal when using a Hilti rotary hammer drill, it goes almost as fast as using a hilti gun and threaded studs.
My prefered method over the years for threaded rod hanging has been using drop anchors, but you have to double check and take care in installing same so you don't get pull out failures. (I'm not really positive if they are listed for upside down use, but work great there anyway). 2nd choice would be using parabolt anchors. Third is the 3/8" hilti studs fired from the hilti gun. (concrete blowouts common). Now Eric, if a small little bitty blip of an establishment way out on a sandbar in the middle of the ocean can afford a 3/8" Hilti gun, surely a multinational jet set megacorporation with headquarters in New Jersey for crying out loud can, can they not???
