So what depth mud/plaster ring would you use on a box when you have (2) layers of 5/8" rock? Don't think they make anything over 3/4". Would you need exntension?

There are several makes of adjustable mud rings up to at least 1-1/2". Some makes are better than others. I have had to fix some, because the method of holding the ring fails and the ring either comes all of the way out of the wall or out its full distance.

Here is one of them.

Catalog Number - Gang - Box Size - Drywall Thickness
AMR1020SG ------- 1 ------- 4" ------- 5/8" – 1-1/4"
AMR1024DG41 ---- 2 ---- 4-11/16" -- 5/8" – 1-1/4"
AMR1224SG41 ---- 1 ---- 4-11/16" -- 5/8" – 1-1/4"
AMR1024DG ------ 2 ------- 4" ------- 5/8" – 1-1/2"
AMR1224SG ------ 1 ------- 4" ------- 3/4" – 1-1/2"
AMR1224TG ------ 3 ------- 4" ------- 3/4" – 1-1/2"

I’ve got a job right now that the owner said they were using 3/4” boards as ceiling and wall cover…….now the carpenters are putting up 2” thick boards! Device boxes won’t be that big of a problem, extension inserts, but fan and lighting boxes are going to be a major problem.

They make extenders for round boxes too. Arlington makes a nice one that should work for just about any fan box too.

Probably special order, never seen any at a supply house or big box store. I’ve used them as deck box extensions on high rises, but those I think would be too tall, and they were metal, so I would have to bond them somehow.

Both my suppliers have them in stock. You can use the fixture bracket to bond the extension if you use a metal one. The arlington readydave linked is what I'd use honestly. If your box is set out for 0.75 then the 2 inches should work with the 1.5 extension.
