Plug in tester shows open ground

I find these plug-in testers are okay when giving positive results, but they rarely correctly annunciate errors.
One just has to understand their limitation, which is they can't indicate multiple errors, only an open conductor or two swapped conductors in an otherwise correctly wired system. Quite simply there's one LED to indicate voltage between each combination of conductors. If you understand the theory of where there should and shouldn't be voltage, you can deduce what the tester does and doesn't tell you. For example if it can't tell you if hot and neutral are swapped if there's an open ground. Fix the ground first and then it will tell you.
