Plug/Receptacle Horse Power Ratings/Line of sight

These questions are for single phase motors on portable equipment of not more than 2 horse power at 230 volts or less

Is the horse power rating published in most major manufacturers specs. for plugs and connectors concern inductive (motor) loads, where the plug is the disconnecting means (no on/off switch)?
If this is the case, would the installation of a motor control switch in line after the plug allow the use of a plug/receptacle rated by amperage only?

On the subject "line-of-sight" How would this apply to a submersible pump, were the water is clouded (not transparent)?

Look at the UL guide information for Receptacles for Plugs and Attachment Plugs (RTRT) herefor standard HP ratings of plugs and receptacles.

No. Under 430-108, every disconnecting means must meet the applicable requirements in 430-109 and 430-110, whether or not there is another disconnecting means available. See 430-109(F).

If the motor is in an appliance or a room air conditioner, or is 1/3 HP or less, then you don't have to worry about the HP ratings.

As I see it,based on information provided, there seems to be chronic wide-spread violation of the horse-power ratings requirements for the most common plug and receptacle, the NEMA 5-15.
Either the horse-power ratings for a lot of cord and plug connected portable equipment are highly inflated,or I am missing something.

It is. Look at Exception #3 to 430.6(A)(1).

Remember you don't need to meet the HP ratings for appliances.

Gentlemen,Thanks for the replies.
At this point, all I need is a clarification of the definition "Appliance". Article 100 seems a bit vague,especially the term "generally other than industrial".
Striving to live by the code.
