Is the horse power rating published in most major manufacturers specs. for plugs and connectors concern inductive (motor) loads, where the plug is the disconnecting means (no on/off switch)?
If this is the case, would the installation of a motor control switch in line after the plug allow the use of a plug/receptacle rated by amperage only?
On the subject "line-of-sight" How would this apply to a submersible pump, were the water is clouded (not transparent)?
