POCOs that help

Some of you will remember I’ve been working with a good sized dairy. Part of it has been to improve their Power Factor and decrease that charge in addition to a rewire. This dairy is the largest instrument metered load for the local POCO district.

They sent me two weeks of graphed data. My contention has been that the fans are the biggest problem, as proven here. We had added PFC to the milk cooling compressors a year or so ago. They would be each peak of the KW. Notice the PF goes up as well.

This goes a long ways to support the work we have been doing there.

Later graphs show improvement as we turned on new fans with PFC. I’m interested to see what the LED lighting will do, if anything.

Glad to se there are others there that do that..
I have set our Dranetz up many times so electricians can pinpoint a problem. Takes me very little time, and shows them we are on the same team with the same goals.

I had one customer that had pump problems with his three phase well pump. An outside engineer convinced him it was the open delta we had supplying this well pump and/ or voltage imbalance issues.
It’s only been like this for 25 years, yet the problem just started... go figure...
the pump people said it was the bank.
the electrician that called me was stuck in the middle...

I let the HDPQ record for three days.
When I dialed the graph in to within cycles, I could see a sharp spike in amps several cycles before I saw a voltage drop.
I told to change out his submersible pump, that the motor mounted to the top of it was fine.
the impellers had worn out and were rubbing the sides of the case and binding the motor, causing it to trip out.

the electrician called me back about a week later. Turns out the pump people wanted him there to verify when they pulled it.

They kept saying they were going to backbill the utility when they proved the pump, wiring, and motor were fine.
bad pump... had the plastic impellers... never heard back from the owners or the pump people.
I still have a very good relationship with that electrician.
