The forums alway seem to have a lot of questions pertaining to pools and bonding questions. Is there any book or internet reference that anyone could recommend to give us more knowledge for our questions? (besides the NEC). It would be great to have a book handy to at least give us somewhat of an idea on even the simple stuff. I keep getting pools as last minute add ons to larger house jobs..Thx

My first pool was over 25 years ago.I have never found it easy too comply with everything.Thankfully i seldom see them anymore.Like i said 10 times and then maybe you have it all.

Whats not easy? I think I need an example...
Fair enough..I have never wired a pool with lights inside before. I need to learn about deckboxes and how to I extend the bonding grid to them, I know that they are in the same pipe from the light to the deck box but what then? . Or what type of fitting do I use to leave the box with #8. There are 2 lights. The deck box has terminals inside of them, are they for grounding or bonding? These are a few of my favorite things :D

Pools are always slighty differant.Things like doors ,windows ,lights, grills, etc. When i was doing 1 or 2 a week i was totally up to date. With code changes and sharp inspectors it has got tough.I think we all know how serious can be.Water and people with electric is always a hazard.Perhaps mike has a book on this ,if not he should.Bigest problem i see is what home owner does after i leave. They start moving and changing stuff.Like adding flood lights and rope lighting or a set of stairs and ladders.

Fortunately around here the pool companies are licensed to do the bonding and the the pool light. They run a piece of 1" PVC to an area where the box will be hidden.

I believe the lights have cords that can be order up to 30 feet. The #8 is run in the same conduit as the rubber cord from the light and terminates in a brass box specially design for pools.

The bond wire terminates there and you need to run a 3/4" PVC conduit from there to wherever you will feed the lights from. You will need to pull an insulated ground along with your grounded and hot conductors. The brass box is mounted with three threaded openings on the bottom. One is for the 1" conduit and the other 2 are 3/4 ".

Here is a picture of the bottom of the box.

I do not know if they still publish these.

Yes, I think that a book specific to pools and spas would be of some benefit. The southern electricians might be very famaliar with the rules, but some of us northerners do few and far between. The mind gets foggy when you don't do so many.

This help is sooo appreciated, my job is Fri. This is a pic of the deckbox just a few more:roll: questions
1) The bonding wire runs from the light thru the 1" and terminates inside the deckbox, so it has no contact with the rest of the grid?
2) The terminals inside the deck box is for grounding or bonding?
3) Do I use a brass KO seal on the unused 3/4" opening?

Btw we have tossed around how expensive the copper mesh grid is to meet the 3ft bonding requirement. Heres a pic of one installed by the pool dude today. Notice the TLC involved

Better on the other side.

His cost just to run this mesh and bond...$1,800.00

Hey, you only need to BOND something that is within 5' of the pool, so if you locate the box beyond that your okay, the pool light boxes I use have a lug on the bottom of the box for this purpose... any light fixtures installed inside the pool need a #8 cu. wire installed with the light wire, and needs to be potted, but pretty simple....

$1,800.00 Do you get a jar a vasoline with that???? Most of the counties in SW Florida are allowing the steel wire mesh to be used in the concrete decks althou I don't know why. The copper mesh is used in paver decks. I think $1,800 is a little (lot) steep.

I beileve that the reason that the deck boxes have terminals in them is because wire nuts are not an approved method of making your grounding connections in a deck box. Look at 680.23(B)3 it specifically mentions "grounding terminal in the supply junction box" I guess its safe to assume you havent run a pipe to feed those deck boxes yet?

How do you plan on supporting those deck boxes?

Hmm I dont know. Any suggestions as to the proper method? The pool guy did them, guess the rest is up to me.

Tony.. You are correct, I did not run the 3/4" to feed them yet. I'm probably going to jump from one box to another with the feed
