Pool Lighting Splice???

We are having our pool replastered and were thinking of having the lighting upgraded to LED. When my pool guy pulled a light to take a look , there is a black connection box that appears to be a splice box on two of the lights. I thought this was totally illegal, but maybe 15 years ago it was allowed in NJ?? Or was it manufactured that way?

I am leaving this thread open for now since the OP is asking about code requirements and is not proposing any DIY activity.
If you recognize the (waterproof?) splice method and have an opinion on whether is it or was consistent with Code, please reply.
 
The niche lights come with the appropriate sized cord that comes directly from the light to the pool light jb which is usually at least 4' from the pool and at least 8" above the water level of the pool. I have never seen one that was spliced as that one is..
 
Wet Niche or Dry Niche?

110.3(B) requires equipment to be installed according to the instructions with that equipment...and I doubt that splicing that cord is allowed.

I would replace that light.

Check that the GFCI is working.

Wet Niche. All are going to be replaced. Scares the heck out of me that my kids swam in that pool for 11 yrs with that splice. thanks for the input.

yep. strongly suggest 12V. LED fixture.

in 40 years of being a sparky, i've seen two
people killed with 120 volt wet niche pool lighting.

one ended with a conviction for manslaughter for the
property owner.

both ended with dead people in the pool.

Looks like I have a legal issue on my hands with the original electrician, assuming this work was not done to code, which it doesn't sound like it was.
Thanks for the 12v idea.
 
The quartz covers on those line voltage lights arent indestructible either. Had a kid break one and cut his foot badly many years ago at the hotel where I did maintenance.. combined with that splice... yikes.

Are new ones polycarbonate/plastic or quartz still?

Halogen lights may generate high enough temperatures that quartz is required over polycarbonate.
LV lights may have the same problem if still halogen type.
LED fixtures do not have nearly the same degree of thermal stress.
