What is the reasoning behind allowing pool pumps to be wired in NM but not the pool light? To take it a step further, why can I install a pool light in MC and not a pool sub panel. SO..hmmmm Can you run sch 80 PVC through attic to run the conductor for the pool sub panel? The more I look at this matter there seem to be need for uniformity in the code.

Re: Pool Pumps, Lights and Sub Panels

Uniformity in the code is an oxymoron. The city of Tampa requires that pool panels be fed in pipe but across the street out of the city NM is fine. They also have different service grounding requirements so much for being uniform.

Re: Pool Pumps, Lights and Sub Panels

I think that based on 680.21 A1 you can not wire a pool pump with NM. NM also does not have an insulted copper grounding conductor #12 or larger.

Also if you are refering to the pool light being either a wet-niche, no-niche, or dry-niche NM is also not allowed. 680.23. Scott

Nasty, ugly, stupid wire! Your mama was a penny!

There, now it's insulted. :p

Re: Pool Pumps, Lights and Sub Panels

That would apply to areas that have adoptted the 05 cycle prior to NM is allowed.

Re: Pool Pumps, Lights and Sub Panels

680.21(A)(4) 2005 allows NM cable to be run to the pump motor in the interior of one-family dwellings.
