I have an installation tomorrow and would like some opinions.

The fixture has a plug cap. I will install a receptacle flush with the finish of the ceiling.
Can the ceiling grid be used to support the fixture? Can the grid be used to support the box, as long as I support the raceway within three feet of the box?

Sure. They make clips for that purpose.

You could also place a 2x4 piece of plywood on top of the tile(s) in question and anchor to it.

Sure. They also make hardware for that.

W/o any knowledge of the weight of this fixture...that is your recommendation? :-?

I found 314.23(D), so I've got the box support answer.

Small commercial building, and layins are everywhere. I hope the grid system is listed :D

Fixture weighs prolly 30 lbs., 30 inches wide and has two chains. It hangs on an angle to the grid, so I will have to go up through the tile. Heck I could use wood, strut, or whatever and lay across the grid and attach to that, eh?

I hope the lay ins aren't supported by the grid without extra support. I would build a support down from the structural ceiling for the box.

If you use the 2x4 ply layed in on top of the tile it spreads the weight batter than simply laying something across the grid itself.

If the grid is designed to hold a troffers, it will hold a pool table light.

As with the troffers, slack wires should be installed.

There are suspended-ceiling fan boxes available. They come with a chain for weight support and arms that attach to the grid to resist torque. I've seen the Carlon version in HD.
