Pool, Timer bonding

Why must the pool pump be connected if it is a block away? It's well outside reasonable concern for equipotential bonding, but is still required to be bonded, isn't it?

(As a disclaimer, I don't do many pools.)

I'm sure nobody wants to be the one to put a foot marker on what a safe distance is...

I don't read it that way, with your way of thinking it would also include the electrical panel or timer inside the house. a timer is not associated with the pool water circulating system, a pump motor and heater are associated with the pool water circulating system.
