i think anyone in the electrical industry will benefit from coming to this website. no matter if they are in a small one man shop or an incredibly huge merit shop or in the union. we all use the same NEC and were all in this together. if someone chooses not to come here than its thier loss. ive learned more in the few months coming here than i learned in my apprenticeship

We have participants from both of those situations here, and everything in between. We just don't make membership or non-membership in labor organizations part of our discussions, and it seems to be working pretty well.

That applies to the moderators as well.

I agree.

I am new to contracting and yes a one man shop looking to stake his claim. I come to this heading looking for advice on running a new electrical contracting buisness. In a few months I have taught myself how much i need to charge per hour , what my overhead cost are, how not to be the low man , the list goes on. Does it make sense for me learn the old fashion way of trial and error. Where else could someone go to learn about contracting? Besides I passed the test because of mike holt.

Like Sir Issac Newton said "I have stood on the shoulders of giants". Tony, you make a valid point in that we should be able to learn from each others mistakes or gains. That would hopefully bring the industry up a notch.

Gee... maybe I know that guy? ;)

I almost wrote your exact response. The large contractors are superior businessmen, plain and simple. They care less about the craft, and more about how the men performing the craft can make them money. They count on the rank and file to sort out the code and the installation methods. The large contractors are not here because there is nothing here for them. I still remain mildly surprised that there are as many participating engineers are there appears to be.

I agree with marc on this one. He's not one of the biggest, but certinaly one of the busiest concrete contractors in town is that way simply because of a friend of mine which is his foreman. Pete does all the work, orders the mud, runs the crews, does payroll, etc. Dave the owner stands around drinks coffee with the good looking HO's, drives around in his highly modified SUV and spends lots of time in Mexico. I'll bet he couldn't even tell you the last time he picked up a trowl, but he's making a bundle.

What is a merit shop another term for non-union?
How do you determine what the guys get paid? Are the wages more or less than the Davis-Bacon Act?

George, now I remembered my post...and I agree with Pierre and disagree with you...my statement had nothing to do with union/nonunion...it was simply congratulating bigjohn in amazement that his company is able to do $167mil with 20 guys, while other outfits require 2000 to generate the same volume...thank you very much....

Pierre, send me that petition you have circulating:D

If you can think of a way to leave a reply to a deleted post in place and not leave the thread confusing, by all means share.
