Power Generation

Re: Power Generation

Thanks Bob. That makes tons of sense all of a sudden. But Charlies talking about wires gathering static charges from the wind too. Which I hadn't thought about before but sounds interesting. And I haven't even looked at the solar activity stuff you guys are talking about yet. I'll probably really enjoy that.

Re: Power Generation

I just read your solar Quebec stuff. Also very interesting. Wouldn't a capacitor between the wye neutral and the earth stop the DC component?

Cores saturated by DC. I never would have thought that.

Re: Power Generation

Bob, you are over my head when dealing with transmission lines in detail. I have worked with them a little but not in any detail. I have worked in distribution for 36 years and did the physical design of 150 to 5000 kVA transformers for a couple of years before that. I also have the disadvantage of not having a degree so I have picked everything up from self study and experience.

We call lines with a static wire or a neutral wire over the phase conductors "shielded construction" but still refer to the guy wire type conductor as a static wire. Thanks for the explanation about solar flares and induced DC, I didn't know how that worked. :D
