How can you tell the difference?

NFPA keeps bouncing us back to 70.. back to 72.. .back to 70... I have a headache

It has to do with the power source for each type.

Take a look at 760.21 for Non power limited circuit power source requirements. And 760.41 for power limited circuit power source requirements.

non power limited fire alarms are very rare. They are typically a line voltage system.

There are some fire alarm manufacturers that can provide you a 24 volt power supply that is power limited or non-power limited. Also, regulated or not regulated, although that wasn't the question.

If you ever take a Jouneyman's test in Massachusetts you better be ready for a lot of questions dealing with power limited and non power limited fire systems.
