I didn't address the 3rd harmonic issue and motors but I'll get back to that. I don't want to talk off the top of my head on this. However have you ever seen a motor control contacts suddenly open and close? Have you ever seen a load periodically drive the motor that is under power as often happened with fans having masssive flywheels? Such situations are becoming far less common but still exist but imagine introducing LC circuits into this mess. But if you want to buy stock in capacitors, go ahead. My money is on VFDs.

Oops, one oversight on my part. If your motors are in the 4800 volt neighborhood than capacitor banks are the solution. To the best of my knoweldge, we don't have VFDs operating at these voltages or similar high voltages. At least I haven't seen any.
