I,m on a project where the gear will take 4 to 6 weeks for delivery. The owner and gc expect me to have all piping in place and all wires pulled. My question is- is there a code reference on not pulling wire until all piping is connected to panelboards? Or is this just something written in certain specs? I think this would be a disater to install after the wiring is in place, not to mention the possibility of damaging the conductors.

Re: prewired

300.18 Raceway Installations.
(A) Complete Runs. Raceways, other than busways or exposed raceways having hinged or removable covers, shall be installed complete between outlet, junction, or splicing points prior to the installation of conductors. Where required to facilitate the installation of utilization equipment, the raceway shall be permitted to be initially installed without a terminating connection at the equipment. Prewired raceway assemblies shall be permitted only where specifically permitted in this Code for the applicable wiring method.

Re: prewired

Just curious - not trying to start a fight, but is there any good reason for this requirement?

I just can't think of a legitimately good reason for prohibiting preassembly of raceways off site.

As you are not an electrician what are you basing that on? :D

There is not a good reason...it is just a make work requiment to keep us busy. :p

The reason is conductor damage.

Also it usually difficult to assemble a raceway off site, truck it, than have it fit where it should. :p

Re: prewired

Let's play devil's advocate....
*****************
Scenario 1:
Imagine the job is complete, gear has been energized for a number of years. Everything is fine, until:
- customer wants to update equipment
- equipment failure
- etc

EC can replace the gear WITH wires in place.
*****************
Scenario 2:
Simply put a properly sized JB in a short distance away from the gear's location leaving only a short section of conduit to be installed and pulled.
Wire is installed in compliance with 300.18
*****************

Any problems with this/these "work-arounds"?

"Pre-assemblied" can be a royal PITA.

Can the EC do this or is the EC just assuming it is allowed? :D

It could be argued that we are required to pull the conductors back to a splice point.

I agree entirely with 2.

How do you do this? I always have to disconnect the wires and move them out of the way. Or do you just pull out the old wires with gear being replaced and pull in new wires? :D :D :D

Re: prewired

Friday, is there any reason you can't do everything except for pulling the home runs?
