Im pricing a High hat job 12 cans in a plaster ceiling in a living room with no access from above. Not sure if its lath or plaster board, or wire mesh with plaster. There is some other work too but im just curious what the going rate is with some of you fellas. My last encounter with this situation I charged 225 per 6" can. Am I wasting my time.

Factor in a bunch of holesaws, rotozip bits, or whatever it is you use to make the holes. The plaster absolutely destroys just about any blade or other hole making device.

be happy you aren't doing it in calif. the going rate is about $100 a hole....
you can get a passel of people to do it for that, and some for $80....

the remgrit carbide holesaws work better than anything else in plaster. you
can get them in 4" and 6", but not 5". go figure. otherwise, a rotozip with
a carbide blade, and a vacuum attachment is your best choice.....

unless they really want smaller cans I always push the 6 inch cans. bigger hole makes it a little easier snaking them in. but in new construction I like to mix them up depending on use.

man that is a cool setup. I like that dust bowl.

Tony if you can get 225 per can then I'd say that sounds like a hell of a price. Seems like you should make out like a bandit at that rate. Do you patch the holes yourself or is that up to the homeowner to pay someone else for that?

I don't pay money for dust bowl. I just pick up the basketballs that blow into my yard from the park across the street and cut them up. Those are free!

If I could get two-twenty-five per for a can light, I'd do nothing but that for one day, and take Tuesday through Friday off.......

good idea about the basketballs. I actually dont use hole saws for cutting out the holes. But I just may do that. I usually just use drywall saw. I wish there were something that could catch the dust from that, other than holding a trash can underneath with my other hand while cutting.

I like the Dust bowl for the fact I can see throught the material to line up the hole saw with the center mark I made for the hole.

I just 'fold' the basketball out of the way, line the bit up with the mark and get the bit started, then 'fold' the basketball back up.
