Pricing a barn

I'm looking for some input from others on past experiences or knowledge on wiring a barn.
I'm in the middle of pricing out a barn for a customer that will house a couple horses in the future.
They are looking to have some lighting and fans installed in the area. From what I'm gathering through article 547 it seems like PVC or UF cable is the best way to go with all the boxes being weathertight but would like to hear from others what has worked best and has held up over the years.

They make the pvc coated mc I wonder how fast that would strip and make up with labor vs the UF.

I've used it and found it to be no big deal. Just set your roto's to accommodate the coating. Good idea for barn imo.

I have been thinking about stocking it for certain outdoor uses. Canadians use it all the time for everything.

I'd suggest PVC. Horses are pretty dumb animals and will chew on any and everything if bored.

Sheep and goats are the worst. Do they try and chew the pvc from what you've seen?

Goats, for sure. Not sure I’ve seen/heard that with sheep.

My grandpa's sheep would eat things worse than his goats. He didn't have electricity other than high up lights in his barn with outdoor switch.

I've not personally seen horses chew PVC, but I was raised with horses and they'd literally chew the walls if they didn't have anything to occupy themselves.

Do they make "bitter" paint that could be put on UF in these situations.

I guess it's due to corrosion, but I'm surprised Art 547.5 doesn't allow GRS as a wiring method

I imagine so, although the data on the cable jacket shouldn't be painted over.

If that's the case then can you paint pvc when it emerges from grade?

I would imagine that it's legal, although I would check code first.

It's probably legal, as the ratings for the conduit are much less important after the initial installation than the ratings for the conductors.

Is that in the NEC that Non metallic sheathed cables need to always be visible. MC isn't.

What about where it says sch 80 on it

Just do what I do, take a Sharpie and write "schedule 80". I write that on all my sch 40 that needs to be 80!

The little I've worked in horse barns, I was told to keep everything out of possible reach by horses. Nothing in the stall or close enough to reach over and chew on from the door. We ran PVC overhead and I think we came down with rigid to switch & outlet boxes. Been a LONG time.
