Why does it bother you that they are looking at other bids?

Rephrase that, and you have the same scam some employees will use to get more money.

Joe Sixpack is getting $20/hour at Rip-Off Electric. He applys at Fly-By-Night Electric, and is offered $22. So he goes back to his boss at ROE and says, "Pay me $24/hr. and I'll stay." So they up his pay. Then he call FBNE and says, "Well, I'm already getting 26, so if you pay me 28......"
I had an employee come in and tell me he had been offered more money from a compettitor I looked him in the eye and said" Gee I will sure miss you"

Nothing wrong with that either way. If it was a bluff, you called it and he lost. Back in the 80's I got a 25% raise that way. I found out less productive people making more because they were married or had kids.
Many employers INSIST that everyone keep their wages a secret from one another, for this very reason. That is the worst thing a employee can do.
The fact of the matter is, the "scam" (if you can call it that) works the other way too. Employers who have no need for additional hires place ads just to keep their employees on their toes.

I suspect this is the case where I am working.

Although, I do agree that only my wage is any of my business, I would/will be angry if I was to find out someone made more, although he had less experience and was less productive.

I worked for a guy like that once....he "told" me: Don't tell anyone what I'm paying you ~ you're making more than them.
Even though I had only about 3 years in the business....long story short..the REASON he wanted me quite was that I was NOT getting "more" - in fact I was getting LESS....it was a prevailing wage job and guess who was keeping the difference?
