The facility where I work we are gonig to change our generation from 480/277 to prime voltage 8320/4800. We are going to have engineers give sales pithes about there design services for the change, does anyone have ideas or anything we should look out for or stress anything we should ask for in these meetings, we are a gaming facility (Casino). Thank you.

I have done a couple design projects for gaming facilities. The thing that was most important to the owners was minimizing the impact on operations during the transition. They also looked for familiarity with the way power is commonly distributed in casinos, familiarity with medium voltage power systems, and familiarity with environmental rules related to fuel tanks.

I would suggest being on the lookout for a prospective design team that is more interested in telling you about themselves than in listening to what you want and need.

Critical Power System?

Critical Power System?

Mr. Pappas,

Does your facility have UPS and battery backup systems that keep all of the gaming equipment energized during power outages?
Or does it wait 10 seconds to go on generator?
Charlie makes a good point in assuring that the facility is not interrupted when the medium voltage generation equipment is energized and commissioned.
Some of the obvious questions concern the interface with the Utility. Will they allow a closed transition from Gen to Utility and back? Are there any possible credits for your installed capacity? Make sure you get their buy-in from the start.

I would assume that you are fed from (2) Utility sources. Can each source carry the peak load?

There is allot to consider when analyzing a system for reliability, and I would assume that the gaming industry is much like the banking data centers - NO DOWN TIME.

Make sure you see the design firm's previous work, and possibly talk to their previous clients.

Our system has UPS for the "brains" of the machines only, the machines themselves are slaves to the generators and the 10 second delay. Currently our transfer switches are not closed transition type. The utility credits we have explored a little. We do have two utility sources but only one can carry the full Casino load. And yes any power distuption does hamper some of the machines. I thank you and Charlie, I feel we are headed in the right direction.
