Re: Probably a Really Dumb Question

We have been cord connecting d/w`s and disposal units forabout 5 years now. Before it was leave a length for the appliance and when the plumbers caught up we would do our h/u and call a final. Then at a meeting I said just single receptacle in a wiremiold box and we are done and to hook up is an extra and billable.$45.00/ item to pig tail an appliance cord on I`ll do all day long :D
With a receptacle we get a final, builder is happy,we get the extra so we are happy :D
We usually mount 1 Gang on the bottom plate in the space (offsided ) for the d/w.Have had inspectors say it is not accesable when you have to remove a panel to get to it.In those rare cases a 1 pole breaker lock solves that problem.
Or run a 3 wire to a box under the sink and break the tabs, still need a 2 pole or a tie handle since both land on same yoke. Then appliance tail both d/w an disp.Watch the length of the appliance cord since some inspectors are in on allowed length of both :p

Re: Probably a Really Dumb Question

I thought it was rather typical to just put a stupid receptacle under the sink for the dishwasher. It's amazing to me sometimes how diverse the approaches to something like this can be.

Re: Probably a Really Dumb Question

I'm all for that Allen.

Except I'd prefer you people all did it my way. :D

Re: Probably a Really Dumb Question

Some of our inspectors differ on this subject .One says only under the sink since to get to the receptacle on the bottom plate requires removing a panel it is not readily accesible :D

Re: Probably a Really Dumb Question

What would ya'll say if you just discovered:

 • That the "disposal" cords you're using are rated 60?, and the diswasher wants a 75? rated supply, and
 • The dishwasher has a cryptic "Do not power this appliance with extension cords" comment on it
Is a disposal tail an extension cord?

Re: Probably a Really Dumb Question

Isn't Dishwasher supposed to be pluged in? or some commercial cases hardwired?

And NM cable on the ground under the dishwasher??

Am i missing somehting here?

Thanks
Edward

Re: Probably a Really Dumb Question

Try this test. Hookup a dishwasher with a cord and receptacle. Do the same with a romex fed off a switch for the disconnecting means. Come back in about 20 years and see which one still has good insulation on it. My guess/vote is for the romex.

I like your idea. I sure hope I can still bend over in 20 years to inspect the two methods. :D ;)

Re: Probably a Really Dumb Question

I think I would prefer the stranded wire in a cord to the solid wire in romex for a dishwasher. I think there would be some vibration there, and I think there is some article that requires stranded wire for connection to appliances where vibration might be an issue.
