Thanks Again Samblv!

Thanks Again Samblv!

Good Job Again Samblv..........Great info. I am printing the long replies, especially the ones full of info so I can re-read at will and digest. In fact, I think I will make a 3-ring binder, encase them in protective plastic, to use and share.

:)

If you submit a substitution per the "agreement", and it is an equal or better to what was specified, the engineer must provide a valid reason why it is not accepted.

Good advice! And be careful of the time limitations on substitutions. EC's seem to ignore it or don't know it, and then get PO'd when they submit substitutions as shop drawing submittals (rather than substitution forms) and I reject them.

Hi!

Can you elaborate alittle since I have just learned submittals (at bid time?) and know nothing about substituations.

Thanks Lots!

Fairly simple - if you'd like to use something other that what was specified, there are procedures for submitting substitutions. Sometimes the substitution forms are due with the bid, sometimes within a short time period after award of contract. I don't have a spec with me, but I think the procedures are usually in the General Conditions Section or Division 1 of the specifications. They may also be mentioned in your Division 16 specs.

Watch for wording on substitutions that says the Owner has ability to reject substituions at his sole discretion. it is also the EC responsibility to PROVE they are equal. It is not the engineers job to try and figure out if it's equl or not.
