Properly mounted box?

How deep is a metal octogon box?

I prefer plastic boxes for NM. It seems like one less place for a short.

I do stock a couple of 3/0's and 4/0's but I would have had to go to the truck, measure the depth, get a connector and ground screw. I already had the plastic box in my hand.

1.5" deep which is less shallow than the 4/0 plastic box. You wouldn't have needed to drill out the stud like that.

I would use one of these. No stud cutting required:

A 1.5" deep box would have been set back behind the drywall. I prefer to have them as flush as possible. The drilling took about 60 seconds. It comes up quite often that there is some lumber in the way and has to be routered out a bit to accomodate the depth of a box.

Fan box wouldn't work. The stud was set back behind the drywall 2.25".

In my recent San Francisco inspection an inspector indicated that driving a screw through any plastic box is a listing violation. If it didn't come with fasteners, any you add would violate the listing. Seems appropriate.

While I don't buy into that particular thinking - as the reason will vary from inspector to inspector - especially in SF. IMO it is an unguarded, ungrounded rough/sharp metal edge inside the box, and a conductive path outside the box. (And outside the intent of the specification in the code for the box) And really matters not which reason any particular AHJ picks to nix it - there better ways to get the job done in both picures. (the OP and the one just above by 220/221)

OP - a 4S and a ring/cover.

220/221's pic - 3/0 or 4/0 box and fur it out to finish. Sure we sparkies don'y carry 3/4" ply often - stacks of washers and some long screws????
