So it’s my understanding that you size pull boxes only if youhave #3 or larger wire. So if I have a 1”homeruns w/ #10’s going to a box I would not use the pull box size calculation? I’duse box fill?

#4 or larger but you still have to make sure the pull box is adaquate for the smaller sizes. You don't have to use the box sizing per 314.28
Since the cat's out of the bag, for conductors smaller than #4 you would use the cubic inch value in T314.16(B) for each conductor.
