So it’s my understanding that you size pull boxes only if youhave #3 or larger wire. So if I have a 1”homeruns w/ #10’s going to a box I would not use the pull box size calculation? I’duse box fill?

Here is a challenge for you. At least one of the statements you made above is not correct. Review article 314 of the code. Tell us which one. After reviewing that article you should be able to answer your own question.
 
#4 or larger not 3 or larger, but you still have to make sure the pull box is adaquate for the smaller sizes. You don't have to use the box sizing per 314.28
 
Since the cat's out of the bag, for conductors smaller than #4 you would use the cubic inch value in T314.16(B) for each conductor.
