Pulling Wire To a 42 cir panel

Is there a easy way to number my wire on a 42 cir panel by using math so i could get the right color on cir 31 or any breaker. instead of numbering 1 through 42 and putting black,red,blue,or brown, orange, yellow next to each phase.

C phase is divisible by 6 and divisible by 6-1
B phase divide by 6, +3 or +4
A phase divide by 6, +1 or +2

cir 31 6*5 +1= A phase
cir 41 6*7-1 = C phase
cir 27 6*4+3= B phase

All multiples of 6 are C phase.

Multiples of 6 -1 are also C phase.

Multiples of 6 -2 and -3 or +3 and +4 are B phase.

Multiples of 6 +1 and +2 are A phase.

It is easy-- you do need to know math a bit.

What is Black ? Or "A" phase

Most of the guys in our shop do it how Dennis does. Divide by six, if there's a remainder use that to determine circuit number and wire color.

The job I'm running now, I just make out a temporary panel schedule on a piece of notebook paper. On every third line, label it black or brown depending on system voltage. It's not necessary to color label EVERY circuit number. Your guys can figure out what comes next after brown, etc.

#1 and #2 are black
#3 and #4 are red
#5 and #6 are blue
once you exceed these numbers you divide that number by 6 the remainder will equal one of the above numbers if the remainder is 0 this will be blue.

Breaker # 32 divided by 6 = remainder of 2 = black

i would much rather see anyone in the trade working it from the math as opposed to having a cheat sheet made for them

I used to work with a whole bunch of guys who had these neat little, printed cards for 120/208 and 277/480

the problem was, that if they didnt have the card, they couldnt figure it out.

You can hand out 'cheat sheets' to the crew, and tomorrow, 80% of them will have lost them or forgot them. So you hand more. Same guys lose 'em or forget 'em.

Make 'em learn it. Cheat sheets are a crutch, and providing them makes you an enabler.
