  • Yes.
  • 'every actually done service work' is actually above my paygrade to understand.
  • I did not realize it was part of the qualification.
  • You still do not seem to understand the issue and concern.
  • Ignorance remains a bliss........

It says you are a "staff engineer"...so, i would have to assume you've never done service work...you are the same as most engineers i've met....ARROGANT....you know everything...there's more than one way to accomplish this task, yet you want to consult a "civil guy" or whatever that is(i would assume civil engineer, but you claim that's not what you meant)...the issue is soil errosion....i doubt a 1 inch hole will cause an entire driveway to crack, thats all that everyone is saying

I was not born as a staff engineer, nor did I graduated from school and went to work. I worked through college and went to school at night. I had worked many different jobs, both skilled and unskilled. You keep insiting on that it could NOT be a problem despite;
  • no soil data was offered,
  • no boring depth was specified,
  • the manufacturer of the boring equipment offers a free engineering service to advise on how the boring should be done.
  • I think the arrogance is not usually manifested by questioning.
  • Unwilling to recongnize, or even consdier the validity of a question is arrogance in my book.
  • I don't - unlike you - know everything.
  • Conclusively; other's knowledge does not intimidate me.

no, i DO respect YOUR opinion...im just a regular guy.....NO, i DON'T know everything- actually, i think my knowledge of this trade is not what it should be....thats why i come to this forum to learn from guys that have been doing this for years- and i learn alot from this site...point is, MY OPINION, is that consulting a "civil guy" is over-kill and impractical....that's all i'm saying...and sorry past experiences with engineers is why i was rude(did some reapairs at an engineering firm....every one of the 100 engineers had an opinion about the work i was doing...just got a little frustrating)

Yellow pages.

There are specialists in this type of thing. They come along, work magic, give you a bill, you mark it up and hand it to your customer. And they have insurance!

The best known local company to me are listed under:
* Directional Drilling
* Pipe Jacking
* Trenching
* Underground Thrusting

pipe jacking guys are truly amazing. watching them push 4" pipe under
a parking lot, and across a 4 lane road to a hole on the other side....

snoodling a single run across a driveway doesn't seem like that big a
risk. however, just paying someone else to do it does have it's appeal...

i was watching a crew push a 4" across von karmen, in irvine (4 lanes)
from the middle of a parking lot, for a fiber optic backbone into a data
center... they made it to the middle of the parking lot, and broke a
12" fire main.... the whole parking lot had water squirting up around the
edges, between the asphalt, and the concrete gutter. squirting up like
two or three inches..... all the way around.... took about 4 hours to get
it stopped....

maybe i will just look in the yellow pages....

Doesn't Dig Alert, where notified, dispatch Utilities to mark this stuff?

The company offers cost free assitance. A fool would not take advantage of that. The fact that they offer it, and offer it free, should indicate that there needs to be concern.

I really don't understand this.

If I offered a "free electrical inspection"....who would be my main concern?
The customer or my own bottom line?

Why would a company like that offer free consultation on the use and application of its tool? If you wish your customers to achieve the best results out of the product, how would you go about it? Address the unknown, the variable. Thus good results will spread the news of the usefulness of the tool and bring both return and new customers.

Simply to sell more.

It seems the same to me as the free samples at the supermarket:
Try our fish sticks ~ they are the best!

So you toss a free fish stick down your gullet...
thinking ::maybe it is better than the rain coat wearing fisherman's fish sticks?::...
and you buy a package or three.

Maybe I'm cynical, but NOTHING is "free".
