Interesting. In the UK, cutting off a moulded plug and connecting to a fixed wiring point (fused connection unit) or fitting a re-wire able plug has been proven to NOT be a good enough reason for a manufacturer to void a warranty.

Here they will use any excuse they can sometimes to get out of warrantying something, no matter how irrelevant it is to what failed.

But then there is other times they refund or replace something that is bad and then try to sell same item in same condition to someone else. This is a problem at big box stores, customer returns an item, is broken, defective, etc. returns clerk doesn't know anything about the item and accepts it, it goes back on the shelf to be sold again only for the next sucker to find out it has a problem.

RE post #20 -- Pump cost is $500 with a two year warranty. Interestingly, I called customer as pump is now in my hands so I can schedule replacement. Don't know why, but I asked how he winterizes pumps (did remember he mentioned these ponds of which there are four were spring-fed) and he replied he didn't need to because the water never freezes. Life on this pump was just under 3 years and if this were my money, I'd be pulling pumps every year and storing for the coming season...whether the ponds freeze or not.

What was the reason for failure though?

Disturbing them can cause troubles vs leaving them in place. Seal left in the water might last longer than one left to dry rot. Things accumulate and/or grow on piping/supply wiring and may strain items when pulled on for removal. Is probably worse when piping and wiring are laying across the bottom vs a mostly vertical rise to the surface.
